Brad Bowes-UCO Hockey
UCO Hockey re-entered the Broncho Barn this weekend after being on the road for the previous
three. This weekend they faced an impressive UMary team with high hopes in their first season
of ACHA Men’s Division 1 play.
The University of Mary Marauders were 2-time national champs at the ACHA division 2 level,
amassing an outstanding record of 127-10-7 in their short 4 years + 1 * as a hockey program.
Through their first 7 games this season they are 5-2, with their only two losses being to the
defending division 1 national champs 5-3, and your #3 ranked Bronchos. This is a well-coached
team who is going to quickly make their way up the ACHA Men’s Division 1 rankings.
On Friday night the Broncho’s shocked the Marauder’s early with two quick goals in the first 10
minutes. Cash Regan lit the lamp only 55 seconds into the first period. Sam Sykes had the
second goal just 6 minutes later. It was Sykes again who concluded the scoring in this game,
waiting until the final 8 minutes to provide the extra security. The Bronchos more than doubled
UMary in penalty minutes this game, but were well-rounded defensively, not allowing them very
many grade A chances. Nevertheless, Doug Wakelyn and the defense played phenomenal,
stopping 28 of 28 shots between the pipes.
Saturday night was a different day, and a different result. The Bronchos couldn’t keep the
undefeated season alive, giving up the most goals so far in a game this season allowing 4 goals,
the final goal being an empty netter. The Bronchos had a hard time all night making plays and
couldn’t keep UMary off the score sheet as successfully as they did on Friday. The scoring began
when the Bronchos went down by a goal early in the second period. UCO responded little later
by registering two goals in 30 seconds. These were the only points the Bronchos would find this
game as UMary tied it up late in the game with under 5 minutes left. UMary quickly got the
separator less than a minute later before potting an empty net goal to close it out.
The Bronchos missed having Austin Simpson in the lineup this weekend. Simpson is out
indefinitely for personal reasons.
