Saturday September 30—
Justin Sgro made his season debut for the Bronchos in net for the final game of the weekend’s series with Missouri State. Though making many incredible saves and essentially keeping the Bronchos in the game, the Missouri State Bears struck first 6:48 into the game on a rare even-strength goal. Missouri State didn’t stop there as they made their lead 2-0 with 3:20 left in the first period before a shocked crowd at The Arctic Edge Ice Arena.
The second period saw no goals as the pressure mounted for UCO to rebound quickly, going in to the locker room still down 2-0 with only one period remaining.
On yet another power-play, Sean Leamy got things going 3:39 in to the 3rd period as he put UCO on the board with assists from Mike Haszto and Joel Hornung, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Only 3 minutes later, Rob Deubel fed Joel Hornung who scored on a blistering slapshot to knot the game at 2-2 and send the crowd into a frenzy. It only took over one minute later for Missouri State to bounce back on the powerplay and take the lead once again, making it a 3-2 lead with 12:23 left in the contest. With 6:59 left on the clock, Mike Glowa gave UCO it’s third powerplay goal of the night to tie the game at 3-3. Glowa was assisted by Joel Hornung and AJ Alfrey. On a night where Missouri State had 22 powerplays, they converted their second PP goal of the night with only 3:54 remaining to take the lead for the fourth time of the night, making the score 4-3. only 54 seconds later, Sean Leamy took an akward rebound from an Alfrey shot behind the goal and stuffed the puck just inside the post to beat Missouri State’s out-of-position goaltender to tie the game at 4-4 and send it to overtime.
In the 4 on 4 overtime period neither team could end it, with UCO shorthanded for the vast majority of the extra session sending the game in to a shootout.
With Missouri St. being the visitor, they would shoot first in the 5-round event. The Bears missed their first shot while UCO’s AJ Alfrey scored to make it 1-0 in UCO’s favor after the first round. The Bears evened the score in the 2nd round as they scored and UCO’s Brian Thompson missed on a backhand. 1-1 after 2 rounds. Neither team could find the back of the net in the 3rd round, leaving it tied at 1-1 going in to the 4th. Missouri St. found the back of the net as UCO’s Rob Deubel missed his attempt to tie. After 4 rounds, Missouri State leads 2-1. The Bear’s 5th shooter missed in what would have sealed the victory for the visitors. UCO’s 5th shooter was Brent Block, who had to score to send the game in to extra shooters. Block converted by scoring high on the far side, sending the shootout to a sudden death round. With Missouri St. missing their shot, UCO captain AJ Alfrey sniped the game-winning goal in to the top glove corner to give UCO the win and improve to 2-0 on the year.
The Bronchos travel to Ames, Iowa to take on Division-I power Iowa State in a 2 game series October 6th & 7th
